About the Novel

Content Warning!

Mirrored Promise and it’s previous versions all deal with the same topics. These include, but are not limited to:

  • slavery
  • sexual assault
  • violence
  • stalking
  • a whole lot of “bad” language
  • and probably more I’m forgetting

This is a work of fiction. Please do not sacrifice your mental state for a work of fiction. If any of this seems like it may be triggering, or even just a hard “squick,” I would encourage you to either not proceed, or proceed with caution. I know this story isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay.

I still use “novel, ” as it was where this story started.

On October 20, 2000, I sat in my car, outside of the movie theater I worked at, opened up a small notebook I had with me, and started writing. In about 20 minutes, I had what would become the first chapter of a story I would begin calling Past Secrets.

I don’t think it needs to be said, but 20 minutes doesn’t a good story make. The typed chapter was, I believe, not quite 4 pages. I had planned on 3-5 chapters, 3 characters (Nytehawk, Hunter, and Janus), and that would be that.

Almost 13 years to the day, 42 chapters, over a dozen characters, and 97k words later… I finally “finished” the first draft.

I attempted to edit it. I got a second opinion from an actual editor. I found beta readers. And I felt like I was banging my head against the wall. During writing, around chapter 23, I stopped working on the story. (Because life/depression/etc). I then proceeded to take the story down to it’s base and start over, as I started my life over. I started over something like three times. I finally renamed it.

This is the story that’s now known as Mirrored Promise.

I have renamed characters, I have changed relationships, I have added characters, I have dropped characters. I am killing off characters I never would have dreamed to 15 years ago.
